Αυτή η παρατήρηση γράφτηκε τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1990, όταν το γαλλικό χειρόγραφο υποβαλλόταν για δημοσίευση. Από τότε, το «αμφιλεγόμενο ντίμμι- παρελθόν» εξακολουθεί να συσκοτίζεται ή να απορρίπτεται και οι περισσότεροι μουσουλμάνοι διανοούμενοι δικαιολογούν την έννοια της τζιχάντ ως άκακη εσωτερική πάλη κάποιου ενάντια στα κακά ένστικτά του, ή ως αμυντικό αγώνα για δικαιοσύνη.
